The debate over gender equality in the workplace has been reignited by Shianne Fox, an Australian landscaper who goes by “The Bikini Tradie” on social media.

Fox sparked controversy after posting a TikTok video criticizing the double standard she sees in dress codes for men and women working outdoors.
On a scorching 104°F (40°C) day, she expressed frustration at being told she couldn’t remove her shirt while her male colleagues worked topless.

Fox argued that societal norms unfairly restrict women, saying, “It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I’m actually really over it.” She added, “I just want to be topless like the boys—but no, I will ‘distract them.’”
Fox, who often works in a bikini top due to the heat, believes her request is reasonable and rooted in fairness. She emphasized that going topless should not be seen as “distracting,” calling it a “natural thing.”

While some supported her stance—many men agreed with her call for equality—others criticized her approach.
Some female tradies felt her actions undermined their credibility in a male-dominated industry. One commented, “She does not speak for us female tradies,” while another said, “She makes real female tradies look bad.”

Fox acknowledged the backlash but hopes her advocacy will inspire more women to enter trades. Despite the gender gap—Deloitte reports a 12:1 ratio of men to women in trade work—she enjoys working in the industry and encourages women to assert themselves confidently.
The incident highlights broader issues about gender equality, workplace standards, and the challenges women face in male-dominated fields.

While Fox’s viral moment focuses on dress codes, it also raises questions about breaking barriers for women in trades overall.
