Clogged drains are a common household inconvenience that can disrupt daily routines and cause undue stress. They can occur in various locations throughout the home, including the kitchen sink, bathroom drains, or even the shower.
My dad taught me an incredibly efficient method for unclogging drains that requires minimal effort and only a few household items. This technique is effective, environmentally friendly, and takes as little as 10 minutes to implement.

What You’ll Need
- 1/2 to 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 to 1 cup white vinegar
- Boiling water (or very hot tap water for PVC pipes)
- A cloth or drain plug
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Pour Baking Soda Down the Drain Start with 1/2–1 cup of baking soda directly into the clogged drain. Push it down if needed.
- Add Vinegar Slowly pour 1/2–1 cup of vinegar. It will fizz vigorously—this reaction helps loosen the clog!
- Cover and Wait Plug the drain with a cloth or stopper to trap the fizzing action. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
- Flush with Hot Water Boil a kettle of water (or use hottest tap water) and carefully pour it down to rinse everything away. Repeat if needed for stubborn clogs. This works great for minor blockages in sinks, showers, or tubs.
Tips & Warnings
- For grease-heavy kitchen clogs, add dish soap first.
- Avoid boiling water on PVC pipes (use very hot instead).
- If it doesn’t clear, try plunging or a drain snake—call a pro for tough ones.
This old-school trick is eco-friendly and costs pennies. Thanks, Dad!
