Dentist explains: Why are your teeth yellow even though you brush them all the time?

Dr. Zainab Mackie shared some dental advice with social media users, and it might not be what you expect

If you take good care of your teeth but still can’t achieve that pearly white shade, this dentist might be able to help with your dilemma.

Dr. Zainab Mackie explains that many people who think they are taking good care of their oral health are actually making big mistakes.

And as a result, your teeth could be that dreaded yellow color instead of the beautiful white color we all want.

Dentist explains: Why are your teeth yellow even though you brush them all the time?

There are a few things we can do to keep our smiles bright, such as brushing and flossing regularly, getting regular cleanings, and avoiding foods that can stain our teeth.

But what if you’ve already done all of that, and you still seem to be getting discolored Gnashers?

Well, according to Dr. Mackie, you’re probably committing one of these cardinal sins, even though you’re under the illusion that you’re an amateur oral health expert.

The Michigan dentist shared a TikTok video responding to a concerned man who said he “brushes every day” but “still has yellow teeth”.

She kindly offered the social media user some advice, explaining that there could be a few possible reasons for this.

What can cause yellow teeth?

Brushing too hard

“You could be brushing too hard and wearing down the white enamel,” says Dr. Mackie.

The hard outer layer that coats our teeth and protects them from damage can erode over time, but you can really speed up the process if you’re too enthusiastic with your toothbrush.

Aggressive brushing “can erode the tough enamel shield, allowing dentin to show through, making teeth appear yellow and increasing sensitivity,” according to Willow Tree Dental.

You also put yourself at risk for increased plaque buildup, more cavities, and even tooth loss, so take it easy on the brushing.

Diet and lifestyle

Dr. Mackie explains that your diet and lifestyle also have a lot to do with the color of your teeth.

If you smoke, take certain medications, or are fond of staining drinks and snacks, your gnashers may not be as white as they used to be.

“If you drink too much soda, that’s going to stain your teeth,” the dentist continued. “Acidic fruit juices are definitely a stain.”

Think twice before putting anything brightly colored, sugary or acidic in your mouth, as it could leave a mark on your teeth.

So how can you avoid yellow teeth?

To keep your smile dazzling, Dr. Mackie advises to avoid over-brushing and sipping soda and juice through a straw, which can erode your enamel.

Social media users were grateful for the expert’s insight and flooded the comments section with their thoughts.

One said: “So I’ve been brushing too hard!!”

Another wrote: “Not me literally drinking orange juice after brushing my teeth.”

A third added: “Watching while drinking an entire bottle of Coke.

And a fourth wrote: “Ok, now how do you fix that…”
