Call 911 right away if you see this hanging in a hotel room or public restroom

Coat hooks, typically used for hanging keys, clothes, or bags, are now being exploited for malicious purposes. Reports have emerged of concealed cameras hidden inside coat hooks in public spaces like hotel rooms, restrooms, and locker rooms. These devices, often small and discreet, are being used to invade privacy, particularly targeting women and children.

Recent Incidents

  • In Florida, three cases were reported where tiny cameras were found embedded in coat hooks inside women’s restrooms:
    • Anne’s Beach (May 26)
    • Harry Harris Park in Tavernier (May 28)
    • Circle K Store on Highway U.S. One (May 31)
  • A similar incident occurred in 2011 at a Kansas YMCA locker room, where a woman accidentally knocked a camera off a hook. Investigators noted the device had a sticky underside, making it easy to attach anywhere.

How Do These Devices Work?

These covert cameras are inexpensive ($20–$50) and designed to blend into everyday environments. They’re marketed with phrases like:
“No one will suspect a clothes hook of concealing a camera.”

Key features:

  • MicroSD Card Compatibility: Can record up to two hours of footage on a 16 GB card.
  • Discreet Design: The only giveaway is a small aperture or lens on top of the hook.
  • Motion Sensors: Some models require pressing a side button to activate.

How to Identify a Spy Camera Hook

  1. Look for Unusual Features:
    • A small hole or lens on the top or front of the hook.
    • Bright LED lights (easier to spot on white hooks but harder on black ones).
  2. Check for Sticky Backing: Many spy hooks use adhesive to attach to walls.
  3. Inspect Public Restrooms and Changing Areas: Be vigilant in places where privacy is expected.

Why Should You Care?

While such devices could theoretically be used for legitimate purposes (e.g., monitoring theft), they’re overwhelmingly misused for voyeurism and invasion of privacy. Unsuspecting victims—often vulnerable individuals—are recorded without consent.

What Can You Do?

  • Spread Awareness: Share this information with friends and family to help them stay alert.
  • Report Suspicious Devices: If you encounter something unusual, notify authorities immediately.
  • Use Detection Tools: Consider carrying a portable RF signal detector to identify hidden cameras in your surroundings.

Stay safe, and always trust your instincts when something feels “off” in public or private spaces!
